Friday, April 15, 2016
8:00-10:30 am
The Plaza Club, 900 Fort Street Mall

Join the Chamber and Torkildson, Katz, Moore, Hetherington & Harris for an update on personnel law trends and recent court decisions in labor and employment cases. The session will be followed by Q&A session.

Topics:

  • Federal Agency Aggression:  What the Department of Labor and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission are doing, including revised guidance on interns and independent contractors, and the pending revisions to the Fair Labor Standards Act white collar exemptions, as well as EEOC’s new disclosure of position statement policy and sexual orientation coverage.  – John S. Mackey
  • Medical Marijuana and Disability Law:  What will the courts do in Hawaii and what policies should you implement to comply. – Joseph A. Ernst
  • The Latest Absurdity from the NLRB on Handbook Rules and Policies:  In recent years the National Labor Relations Board has outlawed commonly accepted rules found in employee handbooks that employers maintain for a variety of legitimate business reasons. The Board’s irrational interpretations create a serious headache for employers.  – John L. Knorek
  • Thinking About Juries When Deciding Why to Fire:  12 people decide whether your termination decision discriminated or retaliated. What questions will we ask to find out who will be the best three to strike from the list or try to disqualify? What can you do when explaining the termination decision to help find the right ones?  How can that avoid a dispute in the first place? – Jeffrey S. Harris
