The March of Dimes was founded by President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1938 to fight the crippling disease of polio. The March of Dimes accomplished its mission in 1955 when the Salk polio vaccine was proven to be safe and effective. By the 1960s, its focus turned to the thousands of serious and unexplained physical and mental disorders that originate before birth –a problem even more challenging than polio. In 2005, the March of Dimes turned the spotlight on another threat to the health and lives of babies – the growing, serious and costly problem of premature birth.
This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the March of Dimes and we will gather on November 16th to celebrate our legacy, impact and innovation throughout the decades and continue the fight for the health of all moms and babies.
This year the Franklin D Roosevelt Award for Distinguished Community Service will be presented to Kaiser Permanente Hawaii for their 60 years of serving the people of Hawaii.
