President & CEO, UHA Health Insurance

Howard Lee, President and Chief Executive Officer of UHA Health Insurance, leads the organization at a time when the health insurance industry is preparing for unprecedented change as a result of healthcare reform. He was unanimously voted by the UHA Board of Directors to assume the company’s top management post in May 2011, succeeding Max Botticelli, MD, UHA’s founding CEO.
 
He joined UHA as Chief Financial Officer in 1997, a year after the new, fledgling company was founded, and continued in that role until 2005. He was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2003, and was named Executive Vice President a year later. In addition, Lee has served on the UHA Board of Directors since 1999, and served as Treasurer from 2004 to 2011.
 
Lee is a proven leader, playing an instrumental role in helping UHA navigate through turbulent change during a period when its reserves dipped below what was required. UHA emerged successfully from rehabilitation in 2004, and ended 2011 with revenues exceeding $156 million, ranking UHA among Hawaii’s Top 100 companies. UHA’s network of providers rivals that of the largest health plan in Hawaii, and is the only health plan in the state founded and guided by physicians.
 
Lee is also a Director of the Hawaii Association of Health Plans, a Director and Treasurer of the Waikiki Health Center, Director of the Hawaii Divison of the American Heart Association, Director of the Arthritis Foundation of Hawaii, and was the Walk Chair for the American Diabetes Walk Hawaii - 2014.
 
Prior to joining UHA, Lee was Vice President and Controller with Magoon Estate, Limited and Guenoc Winery, in Hawaii and California, from 1991 to 1997, and served as an Audit Manager with Coopers and Lybrand International, CPAs from 1984 to 1991. Lee was born and raised in Hawaii and graduated from James B. Castle High School in Kaneohe and the University of Hawaii-Manoa, where he received a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting.
